SXU Recognized by Illinois Governor for Commitment to Equity
Saint Xavier University (SXU) was recently acknowledged in Governor JB Pritzker's proclamation honoring the Illinois Equity in Attainment (ILEA) initiative cohort of 25 pioneering, diverse, equity-focused Illinois colleges and universities.
"Our work is deeply rooted in equity, driven by a commitment to fostering student success. We understand that addressing systematic barriers is essential to ensuring that all students – particularly those from historically underserved and underrepresented communities – have access to the opportunities they need to thrive," said Natalie Page, Ed.D., acting provost.
The University has been involved with ILEA for several years, and the recent recognition reinforces SXU's long-term commitment.
In October 2018, the Partner for College Completion introduced ILEA, a flagship program designed to drive immediate and impactful action among a diverse cohort of public and private nonprofit colleges across Illinois. The institutions involved in the program made a public commitment to the program's mission of closing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps by 2025 while actively focusing on improving student completion rates on their campuses.
In 2022, SXU submitted an institutional equity plan and met biannually with a regional program director from the Partnership for College Completion to provide updates and discuss progress. The University also submits an annual program that highlights how goals are being achieved with a strong focus on data-driven analysis.
"By prioritizing equitable outcomes, we aim to create an inclusive educational environment and wrap-around services that empower students to overcome challenges, realize their potential, and achieve their goals. This commitment is not just about fairness; it is about transforming lives, enhancing educational attainment, and building a stronger, more just future for all students," said Page.
ILEA helps ensure that SXU remains focused on advancing equity and addressing disparities, a critical institutional priority. The commitment reflects SXU's dedication to fostering student success for all, particularly for those who face systemic barriers to higher education. To complement this work, the University established the Retention Think Tank Committee, a collaborative effort dedicated to analyzing data and developing innovative, student-centered solutions to improve retention rates and support students on their paths to graduation.
This initiative embodies SXU's institutional emphasis on creating a culture of service and belonging, where every student is equipped with the tools, resources, and support needed to thrive. By prioritizing equity and retention, the University reaffirms its mission to transform lives and help every student achieve their full potential, from semester to semester and beyond.
