SXU to Host Domestic Violence Candelight Walk

Saint Xavier University (SXU) is sponsoring a Domestic Violence Candlelight Walk and program on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The walk will begin outside St. Gianna Parish at 6 p.m. and proceed to the main entrance of Saint Xavier University for a 6:30 p.m. panel discussion.   

This event aims to bring the community together to take a stand against domestic violence, to raise awareness, and to support survivors. In Illinois, there are 115,000 to 125,000 reported cases of domestic violence each year. In 2025, 137 people died from domestic violence incidents. This represents an alarming 140% increase since 2022.

The program at Saint Xavier will feature a panel presentation on culturally competent strategies for identifying, responding to, and supporting victims of abuse. Panelists will represent Arab American, African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Polish communities. 

Attendees will have access to resource tables and can talk to agencies and organizations that support victims by providing information to help individuals and families affected by abuse. These include court advocates, shelter and housing services, legal services, and community services. 

The event directly aligns with the Sisters of Mercy critical concern of nonviolence. The Sisters of Mercy work for peace through prayer, education, and personal and communal practices of nonviolence. They are committed to preventing domestic violence and abuse of women and children, stopping human trafficking, and reducing community violence. 

St. Gianna Parish is located at 10233 S. Central Park Avenue in Evergreen Park. If it rains, participants should go directly to the main entrance at Saint Xavier University, located at 3700 W. 103rd Street in Chicago.
