Saint Xavier University (SXU) senior Natalie Drez recently graduated summa cum laude, majoring in elementary education with a minor in special education. Drez, who has a passion for helping children learn, grow and feel confident, is excited to begin her next chapter as an educator, and she credits SXU for preparing her for success.

Drez was drawn to study education because she has always loved working with children and helping them in meaningful ways. She is especially drawn to the elementary level because it is such a critical time for building foundational and academic skills.

"I am passionate about creating inclusive classrooms where every child feels supported, valued and capable of success. Teaching allows me to make a lasting impact by helping students growth both academically and personally," said Drez.

Drez's brother, who also attended Saint Xavier, spoke so highly of his student experience that Drez was inspired to tour the campus. There, she met the late Meg Carroll, Ed.D.

"When I was touring colleges, I had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Meg Carroll, who was incredibly supportive and welcoming. She took the time to answer my questions and helped me feel confident in my decision. SXU stood out to me because of its strong education program and the supportive, community-focused environment I experienced from the very beginning," said Drez.

Drez believes her classes, through a strong balance of theory and practical application, prepared her well for the future.

"I gained valuable skills in lesson planning, classroom management, differentiation and assessment. I also developed stronger communication, adaptability and reflection skills, which I know will be essential in my future classroom," said Drez.

Drez found her student-teaching experience to be both challenging and rewarding, allowing her to apply everything she had learned in a real classroom setting.

"I grew in confidence as an educator and felt very supported by SXU through consistent communication, guidance from my cooperating teacher, and feedback from my supervisor, all of which helped me grow professionally. SXU provided meaningful opportunities to connect with peers, collaborate with educators, and grow professionally as a future teacher," said Drez.

Drez, who recently passed her elementary education content exam and received her Professional Educator License (PEL), plans to begin a career as an elementary school or special education teacher, where she hopes to create an inclusive and engaging classroom.

"I am extremely grateful for my time at Saint Xavier University and the experiences that shaped me into the educator I am becoming. I feel fortunate to have been part of such a supportive and mission-driven community."
