SXU Alumna Joins Law Firm as Partner
Saint Xavier University (SXU) alumna Katie Haskins '98 recently joined the premier Chicago-area family law firm STG Divorce Law as a partner. Haskins looks forward to serving clients all over the Chicagoland area with a team of dedicated professionals who are as passionate about family law as she is.
"In my work as a family law attorney, I help people navigate what can be the most difficult time in their lives. I enjoy explaining to clients how the law applies to their case. I work hard with clients to try to help them achieve the best results available to them under the law, and I strive to be a formidable advocate for my clients in negotiating settlements and litigation as a respected professional in the legal community," said Haskins.
Haskins, who majored in history and minored in education at SXU, was drawn to the University because she knew it was well-respected for its education field programs and she wanted to become a high school educator.
"I was also a young mother, and SXU made it possible for me to both get an incredible liberal arts education and take care of my young family," said Haskins.
Though Haskins initially pursued a career as a high school social studies and science educator, she has been a lawyer for 15 years, practicing family and divorce law. Haskins feels her education at SXU prepared her very well for law school and her practice in her legal career.
"I was very fortunate to have wonderful professors who were very formative in helping me hone both my writing and critical thinking skills. I was involved in many of my courses, both within and outside my major. I was also an academic tutor covering several subjects," said Haskins.
Haskins looks back fondly on her time at SXU, grateful for the community she built with peers and faculty.
"Some of my favorite and most vivid memories of my time at SXU are in classrooms, where I collected and cultivated knowledge from profoundly astute professors. I was very fortunate to have so many highly intelligent and talented educators at SXU. They all really appeared to enjoy teaching and were always very generous with their time for their students. I was also very lucky to have had interactions with peers who were hard-working and kind to me," said Haskins.
For Haskins, who has predominantly worked in service-related positions, SXU's Mercy mission is meaningful.
"Compassion, empathy, understanding, hard work and giving time to the community are all attributes necessary for success and effectiveness in both education and law. I have been active in volunteering my time for various boards, events and activities with my alma mater and the legal community," said Haskins.
As Haskins looks to the future, she plans to continue working hard and spending time with her wonderful family and friends. She is grateful for her SXU education, professors and experiences, both as a student and an alumna.
"My SXU education was truly formative in helping me develop the belief that I was intelligent and could be successful in my educational pursuits and future career. My time at SXU was an overwhelmingly positive, life-trajectory-forming experience."
