With profound grief, SXU mourns the loss of education professor Meg Carroll, Ed.D., who was a pivotal and cherished member of the Saint Xavier community for many years.

"Dr. Meg Carroll spent the majority of her life in service to Saint Xavier's students and the University. Meg loved her students and she remained devoted to them beyond graduation.  She lived the mission and values of Saint Xavier and her legacy will endure. Saint Xavier is so much better because of Dr. Meg Carroll," said Keith Elder, Ph.D., SXU president.

For almost four decades, Carroll taught and mentored Saint Xavier University undergraduate and graduate students who were striving to become educators. Her teaching and scholarly work focused primarily on special education, inspired by her lifelong commitment to uplifting those with unique or underserved needs.

"Meg touched so many lives -- SXU students, family, colleagues and friends. Her spirit will be a part of this University for years to come. I miss her dearly," said Lydia O’Grady, coordinator of the Education Division.

Carroll embedded her students with the knowledge, compassion, and confidence to excel and shape lives in the classrooms and administrations of schools throughout the Chicago area and beyond. She volunteered for many years on the boards of the Learning Disabilities Association of Illinois and Our Lady of Tepeyac High School.

Carroll earned a master's degree in learning disabilities from Chicago State University and a doctorate in education with a focus on curriculum and instruction (and minors in special education, reading, higher education, and philosophy of education) at Loyola University Chicago. She published five books and more than 35 articles.

A memorial service celebrating Carroll's life will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at noon in McDonough Chapel.
