Saint Xavier University (SXU) will host "Birthing a New Universe Story," contemplative early works by Christian Brother artist Kenneth Chapman, CFC, now through March 5, 2025.

"Birthing a New Universe Story" comprises a set of earlier works that introduce a number of Br. Chapman's explorations into an emergent cosmos seen through the lenses of space exploration, post-Vatican II understanding of the Church as the People of God, and the call of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin for a new articulation of our universe story.

Br. Chapman, who first realized he wanted to become an artist at the age of 10, has been a teacher and artist for seven decades, and his art chronicles a profound spirituality, rich theology, deep mindfulness of creation, attentiveness to human emotion, and a fascination with the evolving cosmos.

Using watercolor, oils, acrylics and enamels on paper, canvas, clay and metal, he invites the viewer on a journey that evokes new ways of seeing and believing. Br. Chapman chooses to be non-figurative in his works, connecting human and spiritual values. He believes his best prayers are his paintings, and within them, he hopes to lead people to the divine through heart and mind.

Br. Chapman's paintings were selected for the Eucharistic Congress Art exhibition in 2024. The works, from different moments of a lifelong engagement in contemplative thought and artist expression, offer Eucharist images present in recent writings of Pope Francis. The Vatican has used Br. Chapman's paintings to illustrate publications, invitations, programs, and workshop aids.

The artist's presentation and reception will be held Wednesday, January 29, at 4 p.m. at the SXU Gallery. On Wednesday, February 5, a similar presentation and reception will be held for Brother Rice High School community members and patrons at 7 p.m. The SXU Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Gallery at 773-298-3081.
