Celebrate Black History Month with SXU

Celebrate a variety of fun, educational, and interconnective events for Black History Month with Saint Xavier University (SXU) this February. Students, staff, faculty and the community are invited to participate in activities that will foster meaningful conversations and celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions made by the Black community.
"SXU is honored to celebrate Black History Month. SXU has activities planned throughout this month to recognize the contributions of Black Americans to the fabric of the United States. Even though this month is special, the SXU community embraces the legacy of Black Americans throughout the year," said Keith Elder, Ph.D., SXU president.
Black History Month Library Display
All month long, the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library will display curated works selected by librarians, faculty, staff and students, ranging from children's books and literature to scholarly monographs.
Black Down Memory Lane
Walk through the decades and continue through the new millennium in the Butler Reception Room.
Lunch-and-Learn – February 3
The SXU community is invited to join the Office of Belonging and Engagement's monthly lunch-and-learn with Dr. Daniel Ryan Davis on "Using Hip-Hop to teach African American History."
Pullman National Historical Park Museum Tour - February 3
Celebrate Black History Month with a park ranger at Pullman National Historical Park. Discover how Pullman's diverse workforce left their defining marks on U.S. labor history, from the workers building railcars in the factories to the porters who defined the onboard experience.
Writing Our Own Stories: A Black History Conversation with Jason Reynolds - February 5
Aurora University will be hosting Jason Reynolds, New York Times best-selling author of many award-winning books and recipient of many awards, including a Newbery Honor and NAACP Image Award. Come join AU in this conversation! This event does require advance registration.

Join Tracy Baker and the Master's Collective in the SXU Diner Atrium as they share Black history through Black music.
Best of Black Artwork Contest – Submission Deadline: Friday, February 21
Calling all artists! Submit the artwork that represents what you perceive to be the best characteristics of Black culture, whether it be specific to one country/people or to all African countries/people in general. Black Out Event with Athletics - February 22
Dress in all black and come watch the men's and women's basketball teams play in the Shannon Center. This event will include a food truck, so come prepared to cheer, eat, and commemorate the event with a picture.
Nights at the Café - February 26
The evening will take place in McGuire Hall and will celebrate the legacy of Black music across all eras, featuring performances interwoven with a brief synopsis of each era's history and cultural impact. It's a night designed to honor the past, embrace the present.
11th Annual African American Achievement Awards – February 28
Join us for the 11th Annual African American Gold Star Achievement Awards, which recognize the contributions and achievements of Black students, faculty and staff at SXU. RSVP on The Den.
