SXU Student-Athlete Makes Team History
Saint Xavier University (SXU) student-athlete Lana Musa has been named Field Athlete of the Meet during SXU's second-place track and field finish at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championship. Musa made Cougar history as the first SXU athlete to earn the recognition after she won the Pentathlon.
"Earning this award was amazing, and I couldn't be more grateful. I put a lot of time and effort into every single one of my events, and it feels great knowing that I am accomplishing goals my freshman-year self would only dream of. I love every minute of being a part of this team at Saint Xavier. I have support coming from each and every one of my teammate and coaches, who are a second family to me," said Musa, who began running track and field in sixth grade.
Musa carries a host of other athletic accolades over the past season, including breaking several of her own records. She is currently a senior majoring in nursing and minoring in psychology, and she chose nursing because of how rewarding the career is.
"Knowing that you can make a difference and positively impact a patient or simply be there for them on one of their worst days is the main reason I pursued nursing," said Musa.
Musa believes that the classes she is taking at SXU have helped to prepare her for her future, giving her the confidence and knowledge she needs to succeed.
"Not only did I gain so much knowledge from my classes, but being in different hospitals and areas throughout clinicals has helped me gain the skills needed to be a successful nurse. SXU has provided me with many resources so I can take what I've learned and impact someone's life in a positive way. Saint Xavier pushes their students not only to be the best nurses but to be the best people, which is why I love it so much," said Musa.
Though it is difficult to balance a demanding major with being a student-athlete, Musa focused on time management and staying on top of her studies and assignments. Despite her busy schedule, she wouldn't trade it for anything. She enjoys every moment she spends with friends and teammates on campus and is grateful for the memories she's making, especially breaking school records and winning conferences.
In addition to working at an urgent care clinic, Musa is also a member of the Student Nurses Association (SNA).
After graduating, Musa plans to take the NCLEX and begin working as an emergency room nurse in Chicago.
