Saint Xavier University (SXU) has launched a new bachelor's degree program in game design and motion graphics. The new major offers courses in video game production, editing, sound design and animation. As game design continues to become a significant discipline, the University, which is invested in creating relevant programming designed to set students up for success, responded to student interest and made what was previously offered only as a minor into a full major.

Within the program, students will learn complex theory, tools and technology. They will take courses in 3D modeling, where they'll learn how to build the objects, characters, props and environments within a game. They'll also focus on how to develop games as experiences, storyboarding, character animation, setting key frames, and bringing 3D models to life with movement. Once students reach an intermediate level, they will build more intricate models and bring them into game engines. All courses will prepare students to succeed in both game design and motion graphics, and the models they use can also be used to create animations for commercial or cinematic purposes.

"The gaming industry is a fast-paced, fast-growing, interesting and exciting field. I look forward to sharing my passions with the students and seeing theirs grow. I want them to know the methodology behind the industry. They will learn the tools and how to translate them to fit any job role they're interested in, create a strong foundation, and set themselves up for success," said Jennifer Fuller, art and design assistant professorial lecturer.

Fuller believes that implementing the innovative new game design program helps SXU to stay technologically current and helps students to enter a versatile career path.

"Initial game design courses lay the groundwork for building strong relationships by allowing students to get to know each other through assignments, discussions, and coursework, setting a respectful base where students can feel comfortable expressing their ideas. This helps with their first-year experience and sets them up in cohorts to move through the degree. Throughout the program, students get significant feedback as they build elements to include and discuss in their portfolio," said Fuller.

As part of the program, students are exposed to high-impact opportunities that give them real-word experience.

"Students have traveled to New York to attend the Games for Change conference, where they got to meet industry leaders in game design and contemporary thinkers in motion graphics. This fall, we will be taking students to Seattle for the flagship conference for the Unreal Game Engine," said Nathan Peck, divisional director of Liberal Arts and Humanities.

The degree in game design and motion graphics will provide students access to a developing field in need of creative skilled artists and designers.

"The program offers students a whole new dimension of creativity. Each student has their own idea of what would make a fun and interesting game. I am seeing things that haven't been done before and are very innovative. They are creating games that are entertaining or that could make a difference, and they are bringing their ideas to life at SXU," said Fuller.
