Saint Xavier University (SXU) student Leslie Ortega spent her summer completing an internship, which has helped her to grow personally, explore her creativity, and solidify her passions.

Ortega interned at Cboe Global Markets as a graphic design coordinator, where she learned design plays a crucial role in shaping a company's brand and identity and focused on using visually appealing content to convey the company's values and mission through thoughtful and strategic design.

"Each project, from designing marketing materials to developing digital assets, has taught me how design influences perception and communication. I’ve learned that effective design requires creativity, a deep understanding of the audience, and a balance between aesthetics and functionality," said Ortega.

Ortega's internship gave her hands-on experience and real-life insight into working in a corporate setting, refining her skills, and communicating.

"This experience has helped me grow personally, as I’ve had to step out of my comfort zone, take on new challenges, and adapt to the fast-paced nature of the finance industry. It's been a journey of self-discovery, where I've not only developed my design skills but also gained confidence in my ability to contribute to a larger purpose. The insights and experiences I've gained have solidified my passion for design and my desire to continue exploring how I can use my creativity to make an impact in the world," said Ortega.

Ortega, a junior, is studying business management and digital marketing. As a high school student, she took an entrepreneurship class that sparked her interest in business and discovered that her personality traits aligned well with key attributes needed in the business world. She chose to attend SXU because of its strong business program, supportive community, and opportunities for hands-on learning and networking.

"The combination of my personal interests and the resources available at SXU made it the perfect fit for my academic and career goals. SXU's close-knit environment makes it easy to form meaningful connections with fellow students and faculty and the strong support system provided by the staff is incredibly helpful in guiding us toward our career goals. This supportive atmosphere, combined with the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of the community, creates a unique and enriching college experience," said Ortega.

Ortega believes that the courses she’s taking are preparing her well for the future.

"I feel confident I am being well-prepared for my career. My marketing and business classes have taught me critical aspects of marketing, such as identifying and creating target markets and effectively marketing to diverse audiences. Through practical assignments and projects, I've gained valuable insights and hands-on experience that are essential for a successful career in marketing," said Ortega.

Ortega is very involved on campus, serving as a member of ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America) and TRIO.

"Being part of these organizations allows me to work alongside students who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Through ALPFA, I engage in activities that support Latino professionals and help build a strong network for future career opportunities. With TRIO, I benefit from various support services aimed at enhancing my academic and personal development. These experiences are incredibly rewarding and have greatly enriched my time at SXU," said Ortega.

Ortega is grateful for the experiences she's had at SXU and holds several special memories.

"This past May, I got to join SXU students and staff for an immersion trip to build a home for a family. It was incredibly heartwarming to give back to a beautiful family in need and to work alongside such a dedicated and compassionate team. The experience was not only fulfilling but also strengthened the bonds between us, making it a truly unforgettable and meaningful part of my college journey," said Ortega.

As Ortega looks to the future, she is excited about taking on more responsibilities, leading creative projects, and making meaningful impacts within organizations that value innovation and collaboration.

"I want to work in a corporate setting surrounded by motivating and driven people as a graphic designer or in a marketing role. My internship experience has shown me the value of being part of a dynamic team where collaboration and shared goals drive success. I thrive in environments where I can learn from others, exchange ideas, and be inspired by the collective energy of motivated professionals."
