SXU's Political Science Forum to Host Pop-Up Book Sale
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) Political Science Forum will host a pop-up book sale in partnership with Bookies Bookstore in honor of Banned Book Week. The event will be held on Thursday, October 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Wiseman Student Lounge.
Students will be able to shop a selection of new and used books and bring in quality used books to trade in for store credit.
The Political Science Forum, which focuses on various critical political issues, has kept a close eye on the rise of book banning since a discussion led by their faculty advisor, Matthew Costello, Ph.D., on the banning of the novel "Maus."
"There's been a rise in politically fueled book banning across the country. From schools to libraries, book banning has been a serious issue. The Political Science Forum wanted to bring awareness to Banned Book Week, and Bookies Bookstore, located so close to campus, was perfect to partner with," said Myah Bawadi, author and president of the Political Science Forum.
Students are invited to bring in books to trade. They must be undamaged, of good quality, and relevant. Bookies Bookstore accepts hardcover and paperback fiction, classic books, non-fiction books less than five years old, and children's book, all which must be in very good condition.
"We hope to see a great turnout of staff, faculty and students. The more people we can get to buy, trade and read books, the better! Reading is so important, particularly in institutions of higher education and especially of banned or challenged books. Many times, banned book content doesn't conform to societal standards or political points of view, so exposure to these books is imperative for promoting a well-rounded view of the world," said Bawadi.
The Political Science Forum hopes to make the celebration of Banned Book Week an annual event. To learn more or for questions, email politicalscienceforumFREEmymail.SXU.
