SXU Holds Champ's Career Closet Fashion Show
Saint Xavier University (SXU) recently held the first fashion show for the newly-opened Champ's Career Closet, a free resource that provides professional and business-casual clothing for SXU students embarking on internships, jobs, and professional interviews.
Ballin' On a Budget: Champ's Career Closet Fashion Show was held to showcase the many generous donations of professional and business casual attire received from the community and leverage the free resource for SXU's upcoming College-to-Career Expo on October 4.
The show was comprised of three categories: professional attire, business casual and work from home (a fun surprise category where participants would wear a nice shirt or top with pajama bottoms or sweatpants). The opportunity to model was extended to students, faculty and staff.
"This was a prime time for everyone to demonstrate a part of themselves we wouldn't typically see," said Gloria Avalos, academic and career resource advisor. "I never envisioned myself organizing a fashion show, but it was a hit among the SXU community and I enjoyed seeing the final product come to fruition. Our hope was that students would learn about business attire and gain a general sense of career development skills."
In between each category, Johnna Gerona, academic and career resource advisor, discussed what to do and what not to do during an interview, defining a perfect job, networking strategies, writing resumes and cover letters, the job search, and submitting applications. There was also a competition for tying a tie, and audience members were invited to do some impromptu modeing.
MCs for the show included Gg Rabadi and Kayla Britton Dockery and models included Brieanna Ford, Mario Leanos, Eden Inan Lynch, Adam Moya Amador, Tatiana Alaraj and Jackie Naranjo, among others.
"The fashion show was a wonderful experience, especially with quick thinking and engaging crowds. I enjoyed co-hosting with Kayla Britton Dockery on behalf of WXAV and I am extremely grateful to the Center for SUCCESS for this opportunity!" said Rabadi.
Champ's Career Closet has seen great progress since its launch in April, and the response from the students has been very positive. Students can book appointments to visit Champ’s Career Closet through Navigate or by reaching out to the Center for SUCCESS at centerforsuccesFREESXU.
