SXU Drama Presents "She Kills Monsters"
In collaboration with Spectrum Alliance, the Saint Xavier University (SXU) Drama Club will present "She Kills Monsters" as their spring production. The show will run April 14 and April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m. The show is free for SXU students and admission is $10 for the community and SXU faculty and staff.
The Drama Club was inspired to put on "She Kills Monsters" because they wanted a challenge. President Giuliana Islas fell in love with the humor of the play. Along with Islas, the Drama Club's vice president and secretary read through the script and were shocked to see the show demanded some impressive props. Despite the challenge, they knew they could do it with the talented and incredible group of club members, and Islas believes the show will set the stage for the future of the Drama Club.
Written by playwright Qui Nguyen, "She Kills Monsters" follows Agnes Evans, whose younger sister, Tilly, passed away some years ago. After discovering Tilly's old Dungeons & Dragons module, Agnes travels into the world, where she gets to reunite with Tilly and meet her magical array of friends. Navigating between the worlds of reality and fantasy, the characters take the audience into an exploration of love, grief and growth. The show also carries with it strong messages of LGBTQIA+ representation.
"This is an irreverent story of unconventional sisterhood, grief and tabletop roleplaying games. 'She Kills Monsters' embodies the charm of the mid-1990s alongside timeless themes of loss, growth and misconceptions of the people you know best. It's a journey of not only adventure but also introspection and love in all forms," said Shea Scott, actor.
"The audience can expect a heartwarming tale of closure, love, friendship and sisterhood through the unconventional relationships between sisters Agnes and Tilly. The fantasy world built by the Dungeons & Dragons element of the show adds a mystical perspective to the overarching themes of relishing your youth, emphasizing the importance of relationships with your family and friends, and coping with your grief, however unconventional it may be," added Nuala Hanlon, assistant director.
10% of all ticket sales will be donated to an LGBTQIA+ organization. The show is rated 15+ due to some crude language and humor. For more information, email dramaclub@mymail.sxu.edu.
