SXU to Host Organ and Tissue Donation Q&A Session
Saint Xavier University (SXU) will host an organ and tissue donation Q&A session on Thursday, February 17 at 6 p.m. in McGuire Hall. The event will be livestreamed for those who would prefer to participate virtually.
The event is sponsored by Students for H.O.P.E. (helping organ procurement education) in partnership with SXU's Student Nurses Association (SNA). Students for H.O.P.E. was started in an effort to create lifelong advocates for organ and tissue donation as well as promote the benefits and need for organ donation registration on campus. SNA is dedicated to educating its members to become conscientious health care providers through speaker series and service projects.
Participants will learn more about why they should consider registering as an organ and tissue donor and learn about the potential career paths in the fields of organ procurement and transplantation.
Panelists include Shaun Martin, director of tissue recovery services for Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network and donor dad; Jim Vogel, SXU alum and double-cornea transplant recipient; John Lafakis, Allosource Great Lakes area manager; and Monica Munoz, organ recovery coordinator for Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network, former nurse and SXU alumna.
"I'm thrilled to host this panel as it's the first school-wide event SXU's Chapter of Students for H.O.P.E. will be organizing, and it's so exciting that SNA was willing to work with us as well. We are grateful to have such amazing panel speakers whose experiences range from working in organ/tissue procurement to having personal connections to donation. I can't wait for students to be exposed to a new side of health care, spark some interest in our future nurses and inspire new donors to register!" said Olivia Artz, president of Students for H.O.P.E.
