Saint Xavier University (SXU) recently held the fall Math Colloquium. Around 90 students participated in the event, which was hosted by the Math Club and featured a presentation by biochemistry and mathematics alum Cody Busch '21.

A mathematics colloquium is a forum that offers a broad overview of mathematics, statistics and related fields, accessible for undergraduate students and faculty from other disciplines. Though many students who attended were math majors, all were invited.

Busch presented "The Variational Iteration Method for Solving Partial Differential Equations," which students discussed as a group. The Math Colloquium, held once per semester, gives students the opportunity to learn about different mathematical topics they may not have been exposed to in their math classes. It also helps to prepare math majors for their senior seminar.

The Math Club is advised by math faculty Asmah Abdallah. Actuarial science student Nayomi Del Valle serves as president. During the upcoming spring semester, the Math Club will host several events, including Career Day, where SXU math alumni are invited to discuss their experiences and career paths after graduating from SXU. They will also host their annual Pi Day on March 14.

"It was wonderful having Cody back and watching him use what he has learned here to give back to the community at SXU. Students left not only having learned something new, but with a sense of inspiration and motivation," said Abdallah.

"It was inspiring to see a former SXU student thrive and succeed using what they have learned at SXU. It gives me hope and comfort for my future endeavors," said Nada Alaraj, a biochemistry and exercise science major.
