SXU Hosts Panel Discussion on Human Trafficking on April 9, 2019

Date:04/07/2019

Human trafficking is not just an issue in foreign countries but is also happening in our communities around us. Saint Xavier University (SXU) invites all to attend the panel discussion "Stolen People, Stolen Dreams: Get the Facts on Human Trafficking" on Tuesday, April 9. The event will be held in McGuire Hall on SXU's campus and will featuring Cook Country Sheriff Tom Dart, Sister Carol Mucha, R.S.M., of SXU's Office for Mission and Heritage, Selah Freedom National Director of Advocacy and Awareness Paula Meyer Besler and Pastor Esther Holiday of the House of Glory for all Nations Church. Each speaker will speak for ten minutes followed by a Q&A session.

Join the discussion and find out what you need to know about human trafficking directly from leaders fighting the epidemic and get a real understanding of the issue with different perspectives from guest speaker that includes a survivor of human trafficking.

The Sisters of Mercy have a long history dedicated to spirituality, community, service and social justice. They have worked tirelessly to eliminate poverty, the widespread denial of human rights, the abuse of children, the mistreatment of immigrants and the lack of solidarity among people and nations. In that spirit, they have awarded and honored five SXU students -- Danielle McKenna, Nancy Perez, Marissa Petrey, Esmeralda Ramos and Nicolete Sorrentino -- with a $5,000 scholarship based upon essays written to discuss the aspects of human concern. It was because of that concern for addressing women and nonviolence that the group decided to conduct this panel discussion and heighten awareness within the community.

SXU is honored by its lasting Mercy heritage and dedicated to organizing events such as these to help spread the word on ways we can improve our communities. All are invited to attend the event on April 9 at 5:30 p.m. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Charlene Bermele, DNP, RN, CNE at bermeleFREESXU or 773-298-3180.
