SXU continues offering internship opportunities in Washington, D.C.
Saint Xavier University (SXU) students continue to find new and interesting opportunities to advance their careers while still in college. One of the greatest ways to gain a competitive edge on the competition is by completing an internship! For over 20 years, SXU has been partnering with the Washington Internship Institute (WII), which sends students to work in various agencies throughout Washington, D.C.
Open to any major, students can complete the semester-long program in the fall, spring or summer semesters. SXU students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and permission from their advisor as well as Department Chair of History and Political Science Matthew Costello, Ph.D., to ensure that they will still graduate on time. During the course of the internship, students will work and attend seminars all while earning a full 15 credit hours.
Once a student is admitted into the program, they will meet with a WII counselor to find the internship that best fits with their interests and career aspirations. After putting together a resume and cover letter, the student interviews with organizations to secure the internship.
"Recent internships have included the Office of Communications from the mayor of D.C., the Office of the Attorney General, U.S. Department of Education, Youth Service America, Poverty and Race Research Action Council, Women Thrive Alliance, Coalition on Human Needs and the Steinbruck Center for Urban Studies," said Dr. Costello.
WII offers students the chance to attend social events with other interns while networking with potential future employers. They even provide apartments for students to live in during their stay in our nation's capital.
"WII offers a variety of events, including networking and social activities, such as attending a Nationals baseball game or visiting landmarks, such as the Newseum," said Dr. Costello. "They will frequently host events through which students can meet potential employers or influential decision-makers in Washington."
Throughout the program, students will participate in once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They will shape their professional development through performing the actual work of their agencies and developing practical career skills. Each SXU student who returns from the program has a wealth of new knowledge and a broadened skillset that will surely allow them to be influential in their future endeavors.
