SXU's Kristen Schreck presented at the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle

Kristen Schreck, assistant professor of mathematics at Saint Xavier University (SXU), presented a workshop on the "Mathematics of SET" at the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle on February 26 at The University of St. Francis.

SET was invented in 1974 by population geneticist, Marsha Jean Falco. It is a fast-paced pattern-recognition game of visual perception. Dr. Schreck explored the intriguing mathematics behind the game as it relates to combinatorics, the geometry of lines and planes in three-dimensions and the geometry of hyperplanes in four-dimensions.

Dr. Schreck is on the leadership team of the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle and is one of the founding members. Math Teachers' Circles provide an opportunity for middle school and high school mathematics teachers to collaborate with college professors and refine their problem-solving skills through challenging and fun problems. This collaboration gives teachers resources to initiate student-centered, inquiry-based pedagogy in their own classrooms.

SXU will be hosting the next meeting of the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle on May 21, 2018.
