SXU students presented at ACCA Symposium
In early April, 14 Saint Xavier University (SXU) participated in the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA) Student Symposium at Benedictine University. At this annual symposium, students have the opportunity to present their research on an array of studies, such as social science, biological science and physical science.
Following the submission of their abstract prior to the deadline, the 14 SXU students were assigned a session to share their findings at the symposium. The students who presented their research include the following: Bellal Alzalam, Sylwia Greczek, Ahmad Ayyad, Ameria Shehadeh, Maria Jaramillo, Crystal Saldana, Daijah Green, Deairra Williams, Brianna Williams, Marilee Cervantes-Bautista, Beata Czerwien, Shelby Olita, Hannah Park and Danielle Mountain.
The goal of the symposium was to offer the experience for students to share their research in a professional setting.
The projects that were presented include: "Screening of bacterial Isolates for Antimicrobial Capability and Testing Their Resistance to Antimicrobial Agents" by Bellal Alzalam, Sylwia Greczek, and Ahmad Ayyad, whose faculty advisor is David Elmendorf, Ph.D.; "Inhibition of DU145 Cancer Cells Using Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles" by Ameria Shehadeh, whose faculty advisor is Sharada Buddha, Ph.D.
Social sciences projects included: "The Effect of Mood Induction on Valence Across Time" by Maria Jaramillo, whose faculty advisor is Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "The Effect of Mood Induction on Belief and Recollection" by Crystal Saldana, whose faculty advisor is also Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "The Effect of Mood Induction on Narrative Valence and Emotional Content" by Daijah Green, Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "The Effect of Event Type on the Valence and Intensity of Recalled Autobiographical Memories" by Deairra Williams, whose faculty advisor is also Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "The Effect of Event Vance on Positive vs. negative Event Centralization" by Brianna Williams, whose faculty advisor is also Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "Understanding LGB Men and Women’s Fear-Based Prejudices toward Other Sexual Orientation Groups" by Marilee Cervantes-Bautista, whose faculty advisor is Angela Pirlott, Ph.D.; "Do gay men and lesbians show sex differences in mate preferences? A meta-analysis" by Beata Czerwien and Shelby Olita, whose faculty advisor is also Angela Pirlott, Ph.D.; "Memory Valence Predicts Change in Event Centralization over Time" by Hannah Park, whose faculty advisor is Carissa Broadbridge, Ph.D.; "Trends in Commitment in the International Climate Change Regime: What Gives?" by Danielle Mountain, whose faculty advisor is Mary Beth Tegan, Ph.D.

ACCA's primary objective is to promote collegiate education in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, psychology, sociology/anthropology, and business/economics by stimulating and regularizing cooperative arrangements between the member colleges and universities and government laboratories and other educational institutions in the use of staff and facilities.
