SXU's class of 2017 pays it forward to future students through class gift donations
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) class of 2017 has chosen to pay it forward to future students by making donations to the class gift. The mission of the class gift campaign is to promote a philanthropic spirit among the graduating class by providing the students an opportunity to start their legacy of giving to the University.
"This is a great way for the graduating class to unite in a meaningful manner and make a significant impact on fellow, and future, Saint Xavier University students," said Maloree Johnson, assistant director of alumni relations. "By giving back these student are making an anonymous connection with a student who will come after them striving to achieve life-long dreams. By giving back students have the opportunity to make those dreams become a reality."
This year, 219 graduates raised a total of $4,070.48 for the class gift, which will be matched by lifelong SXU supporters Jim and Trish Morris. The Morris' have been matching the class gift for over 15 years and truly appreciate the philanthropic efforts students make each year – upholding to SXU's Core Value of Service even as they embark on their alumni journey.
"Since so many of SXU students receive aid from the University, both my husband, Jim, and I believe it is important that they begin the habit of giving back as they are about to graduate," said Trish Morris.
Previously, class gift donations have been specific to campus landmarks or students funds. This year, students could choose which program they wanted their donation to support. Academic programs, athletics, scholarships, and student led organizations were all areas available for graduating students to select from.
Class gift donations started shortly before Grad Fest and continued to be accepted even on the day of graduation. Students who made a minimum donation of $15 were given a stole to wear at their graduation ceremony. The stoles are gray with the SXU emblem and "Senior Class Donor" written in red.
