Shannon Center Member Spotlight of the Month – February 2017
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) Shannon Center has been open to the community for over 17 years! As a way to show appreciation of the community's support, the Shannon Center will highlight one loyal member each month. Members will be chosen by a full-time staff manager or student manager and will be featured on the Shannon Center's website.
The Member Spotlight for the month of February goes to both Bob and Patty Johnson. This husband and wife exercise duo have been fans of the Shannon Center since it opened in 1999. Previously using a health club, Bob and Patty find the Shannon Center not only convenient but more personable.
"The people are wonderful here, always friendly, helpful, and supportive; also, we often run into old friends and acquaintances," said Bob. "The Shannon Center has everything we need for the workouts we enjoy!"
Bob is a retired Chicago Police Captain and SXU alumnus. He serves as an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Daley College and Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Ind.). Bob also is an ACE-certified health coach and weight management specialist. Patty is a Chicago Police Officer currently assigned to Midway Airport.
A typical workout for the couple includes doing strength training and flexibility exercises, and running sprints. Additionally, they play racquetball together at least once a week. These avid exercise enthusiasts find life more enjoyable when they live a healthy, happy lifestyle; not to mention being able to spend time together while working on staying healthy.
"Look around at people who are fit and notice how healthy, happy and active they are; when you realize that exercise will benefit you in the same way, then start moving, even if it's slowly at first," said Bob. "Little by little, you'll add things that work for you and that you enjoy and before you know it, you won't want to miss a workout!"
Congratulations, Bob and Patty! Check back to see the Shannon Center Member Spotlight for the month of March!
