SXU hosts events in celebration of Black History Month

Saint Xavier University (SXU) will celebrate Black History Month with events scheduled throughout the month of February. The SXU community is welcome and encouraged to attend all of these events!

'Black Hair-itage' -- Monday, February 6, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge

Learn about hair textures and products as SXU students discuss their hair journeys during this informative event about African-American hair.

'Real Niggas, Lame Niggas, Bad Bitches and Thots: The Evolution of Black Gender Roles and its Impact on the Black Family' -- Wednesday, February 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room

Professor Dr. Daniel Ryan Davis will speak on male and female relationships, gender roles and black family from a historical perspective.

'Spoken Word and Open Mic' -- Friday, February 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Regina Res Center

Join us for an open-mic night where students can bring any creative expression to the table for five minutes. Acts include, but are not limited to, spoken word/poetry, vocal performances, stand-up comedy and musical selections.

'Back Down Memory Lane' -- Wednesday, February 15 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Student Lounge

Experience a walk through the decades, starting with the Harlem Renaissance and continuing through the start of the new millennium. Stop in at any time from noon to 2 p.m. to walk down memory lane!

'Greg Lorjuste: A Journey to the White House' -- Friday, February 17 at 3 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room

Greg Lorjuste served as the deputy assistant and director of scheduling to former U.S. President Barack Obama. Lorjuste will speak about his life, from his upbringing to his college days to his time in the White House.

'Super Saturday: Kickin' it Old School Party' -- Saturday, February 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. in Regina Res Center

Join Black Student Union for Super Saturday and dance like there's no tomorrow! The event will feature a playlist that highlights all of your old school favorites, snacks and more! This event is sponsored by the Black Student Union and the Super Saturday Residence Life Program.

'Identities at SXU: Student Perspectives' -- Monday, February 20 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge

Come join moderator Karen Benjamin, associate professor of History and the coordinator of Social Science Education, and a diverse panel of your fellow students in a succession of last year's panel on identity at SXU.

'SXU Film Series: "The Birth of a Nation"' -- Tuesday, February 21 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall

This film is loosely based on the story of Nat Turner, a literate enslaved man who led a slave rebellion that terrorized white slave owners in Virginia in 1831. It takes its title from D.W. Griffith's infamous lm epic that gloried the Ku Klux Klan and perpetrated negative racist stereotypes of African-Americans.

'We Gon' Be Alright: Hip Hop, Millennials and Political Agency' -- Wednesday, February 22 at 3 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Boardroom

Julius Bailey, Ph.D., teaches in the Department of Philosophy at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. His research interests span from Russian literature to hip-hop culture. A product of Chicago's South Side, he holds master's degrees from Howard and Harvard universities and a doctorate from the University of Illinois.

'African-American Achievement Awards' -- Saturday, February 25 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in McGuire Hall

The African-American Achievement Awards will recognize the contributions and achievements of African-American students, faculty and staff at Saint Xavier University. Formal attire is encouraged.

'Black Tie Affair' -- Saturday, February 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room

Join us immediately following the African-American Achievement Awards for food, fellowship and to congratulate the award recipients and nominees.
