SXU's Professor Meg Carroll presented at two conferences
Saint Xavier University (SXU) Education Department's Dr. Meg Carroll, professor, presented at the 2017 Nonpublic Conference: Transforming Theory into Practice on November 8 in Oak Lawn. Her topic was entitled, "Are They Learning? Formative Assessment of Students with Disabilities." Students with disabilities may learn in non-traditional ways. They may not demonstrate what they have learned in typical ways; however, creative teachers can explore at least 50 ways to assess whether students are learning or not with very simple and some more sophisticated strategies, using body movements, oral responses, written responses and technology. Dr. Carroll also presented at the Learning Disabilities Association of Illinois Workshop with the topic of Child-Family-Community: The Power Trio for English Learners with Disabilities. When considering the needs of students who are English learners, how do parents, educators, and members of the community work together to meet the students' needs? Practical suggestions and resources were shared.
