Shannon Center Member Spotlight of the Month – October 2016
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) Shannon Center has been open to the community for over 17 years! As a way to show appreciation of the community's support, the Shannon Center will highlight one loyal member each month. Members will be chosen by a full-time staff manager or student manager and will be featured on the Shannon Center's website.
The Member Spotlight for the month of October is Peggy Myren. As a veteran teacher and proud mother of four, Myren enjoys the Shannon Center for its resources that allow for versatility within her workouts four days a week. A typical workout for her includes a fitness class – People on Weights or Kickboxing – while also spending some time on the elliptical and the track. Myren has enjoyed the new and old friends who have been able to support her along her fitness journey.
"When I joined the gym, I needed to get healthy and lose weight," said Myren. "My goal was to weigh the same as my license. Despite my weakness for M&Ms, with hard work and dedication I was successful! The better I felt, the more I was able to do. With the encouragement of my kids, family and friends, especially my workout buddies, I was able to accomplish more than I ever thought possible."
Myren has transformed into a fitness enthusiast and remembers that you can do anything you set your mind to as a way to stay motivated.
"You are only as old as you feel – I do whatever I can," said Myren. "As I tell my students, 'never settle for anything less than best!' In the [fitness] classes, there are many people who are in better shape than me, but it doesn't matter; you do what you can and keep moving even though there may be a little groaning along the way. The important thing is that you show up and do whatever you can. You might even make a friend while you're at it!"
Congratulations, Peggy! Check back to see the Shannon Center Member Spotlight for the month of November!
