The Mercy Word of the Week

As we progress through the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, University Ministry offers our community a "Mercy Word of the Week" to help us focus on the themes of mercy that are already so closely aligned to our mission and heritage as an institution sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.

The first Monday of each month will bring a brief reflection on each of the University's Core Values as expressions of our Mercy charism. We hope these focused thoughts will lead to your own considered contemplation on mercy and its role in your life.

Faith: Luke's Gospel tells the story of Jesus and his disciples visiting the home of Martha and Mary. Martha invites Jesus in, and scurries about preparing a meal for her special guests. She becomes annoyed when she realizes that her sister, Mary, is sitting, listening to Jesus speak and not helping serve the meal. Martha is comfortable enough with her friend Jesus to ask him to chastise Mary for her laziness. Much to her surprise, Jesus does just the opposite, and tells Martha that her sister has the right idea. It is fine to be efficient and hospitable, but the more important of the two is to listen to the words of Jesus.

Like Martha, many of us become overwhelmed with the trappings of our busy lives. We get caught up with work, families, friends, and our secular world tempts us at every turn. We need to slow down and have the Faith of Mary – to take the time to put aside distractions and listen to what Our Lord is telling us each and every day.
