The Mercy Word of the Week
As we progress through the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, University Ministry offers our community a "Mercy Word of the Week" to help us focus on the themes of mercy that are already so closely aligned to our mission and heritage as an institution sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
The first Monday of each month will bring a brief reflection on each of the University's Core Values as expressions of our Mercy charism. We hope these focused thoughts will lead to your own considered contemplation on mercy and its role in your life.
Door: Baptism is the basis of Christian life, of life in the Spirit. It is the door which opens up access to the other sacraments. Being open to truth and mercy provides freedom and informs our conscience. One of the great symbols of the Jubilee Year of Mercy is the Holy Door—a door at St. Peter's in Rome that’s normally closed and locked but open for the entire Year of Mercy. Are you longing for happiness? Do you have questions about God's existence? The spiritual soul comes from God through that door.
I attach deep meaning to the "Holy Door," especially during this season of Lent. Pope Francis proclaimed, "It begins a time of great forgiveness," as he opened the Holy Door in Rome. "To pass through the holy door means to rediscover the infinite mercy of the Father who welcomes everyone and goes out personally to encounter each of them." The history of this event encourages repentant pilgrims to enter through the Holy Door to receive pardon or indulgence for their sin. Jesus said, "I am the door, if one goes through me, they will be saved."
"Open Every Door With Mercy:" When I came across this quote, I quickly realized these words would be especially meaningful for me during the Year of Mercy. They are an invitation for all of us to commit ourselves to Mercy, to share love and compassion with everyone.
In opening doors with mercy, we open doors to God.
