SXU junior Kody Kleinrichert receives Provost's Fellowship Award
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) 2016 to 17 Provost's Fellowship in the sciences has been awarded to Kody M. Kleinrichert, junior chemistry major.
SXU's Provost Fellowship supports scholarly activity of excellent quality by junior level students who have demonstrated exceptional aptitude and have performed with high measure of academic distinction. The Fellowship provides financial support for a special project pursued under the sponsorship of a faculty mentor.
Kleinrichert's exemplary achievements as a chemistry student (including a perfect GPA) provide the foundation for his project which includes the following: investigating the effectiveness of chemicals naturally found in various plants that can decrease inflammation and the build-up of certain proteins in the body. These proteins are typically known to be in excess in Alzheimer's patients. Kleinrichert's research will include the extraction and isolation of antioxidant compounds, followed by testing to determine their antioxidant properties and their potential to prevent amyloid plaques which contribute to Alzheimer's pathology. This research may also shed light on rheumatoid arthritus, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). His project mentor is Dr. Bindhu Alappat, associate professor of chemistry.
Kleinrichert, named to the Dean's List, is also a member of SXU's men's basketball team, the SXU pre-health society and the SXU chapter of the American Chemical Society.
