Saint Xavier University (SXU) Graham School of Management Assistant Professor Ekundayo (Dayo) Akinlade, Ph.D., and Rebecca Shalack, alumna were awarded the inaugural Student-Faculty Collaboration grant in fall 2016. The duo's research was published in the Academy of Organizational Culture, Communication and Conflict proceedings. Recently, their article was accepted for publication in the Journal of Organizational Culture, Communication and Conflict (JOCCC), a peer-reviewed journal that emphasizes the publication of theoretical and empirical works that contribute new knowledge and understanding to various business-oriented areas.

"Publishing our article in such a journal allows us to share our findings, ideas and insights with other scholars throughout the world," said Dr. Akinlade. "The fact that this article was the outcome of a collaboration between an undergraduate student and me, is very rewarding and has inspired me to engage SXU students more in research."

Both Dr. Akinlade and Shalack's research focused on human resource practices that occur in non-profit organizations.

"Our study examined the nature of these practices using interviews and surveys collected from 133 volunteers," said Dr. Akinlade. "We introduced the concept of mission-driven HR practice, to classify the human resource practices that emerged and to underscore the importance of a values approach to strategic HR management in non-profit organizations. We found that mission-driven HR practices promoted volunteer retention and recruitment by fostering an inclusive environment where volunteers irrespective of their identity group membership (age, sex, disability, race, etc.) had a positive experience, which motivated them to return and encourage others to volunteer at the organization."

SXU created the Student-Faculty Partnership Endowment in September 2013 to find grants to support collaborative student-faculty research or creative projects to encourage continued growth in such activity. The inaugural year for the program was made possible by a federal Title III grant, generous contributions from the classes of 2013 and 1962, and Jim and Trish Morris '83.
