SXU's Charlene Bermele receives 2016 Teaching Excellence Award
Saint Xavier University's (SXU) School of Nursing (SON) Assistant Professor Charlene Bermele, M.S.N., R.N., recently received the Teaching Excellence Award for her exemplary qualities in her interaction with students in and outside of the classroom.
Professor Bermele challenges her students to reach their full potential. She also embraces her role as a mentor. Ultimately, her goal is to provide and prepare her students with a strong foundation as they enter the profession of nursing.
This award is based on student nominations. The following are excerpts from the students' nomination forms on the impact of Professor Bermele on their education:
"Professor Bermele has been a role model and inspirational educator to me since I met her. She worries not only about the academic aspect of her students' lives but she sees each of us holistically and wants to make sure each student she meets is positively impacted by her in some way. She gets to know each student who comes to her, and SXU's School of Nursing is absolutely blessed to have such an excellent instructor preparing its student nurses for every aspect of life."
"She goes above and beyond in remembering what is going on with our lives and is always supportive of us."
"Professor Bermele is an educator who truly cares about her students as people and puts effort into helping each and every one of use to reach our full potential."
This award recognition reflects Professor Bermele's dedication to not only her students but her profession. She's always making sure her teaching style remains consistent and to the highest standards.
"In terms of my philosophy of teaching, I would like to say that I consider the 3 P's in my role as a nurse educator and they include: Passion for what I do as a nurse educator; Persistence to creatively assist students in reaching their maximum potential; and Perseverance to shape the next generation to be the leaders of the future," said Professor Bermele.
She serves as director of the Nursing Resource Center at SXU, as well as hospital manager/nurse educator at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center Chicago. Professor Bermele has engaged in successful grant-writing activities, and has been fortunate to receive funding from the Department of Health and Human Services. She has served on numerous University committees including the following: the Election Committee, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, Undergraduate Academic Retention and Progression Committee and Center for International Education Advisory Board.
Professor Bermele holds a Master's of Science in leadership and community health from SXU and a Bachelor's of Science in nursing from Lewis University. In 2016 she will complete her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Loyola University.
As a mercy associate, Professor Bermele wants to further the mission of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy through her own actions. She feels very privileged to be able to play a role in shaping the next generation of nurses and educated members of society.
