Threat Assessment Team

Overview

Saint Xavier University is committed to the safety of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Threat Assessment Team (TAT) strives to prevent targeted violence through a proactive, evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of perceived threats posed, or potentially posed, to or by members of the University community. The Threat Assessment Team (TAT) will also work to identify and offer supportive resources for involved and impacted individuals.

The campus community is responsible for actively participating in the recognition of concerning and threatening behaviors (as outlined below) and for reporting such behaviors to the Threat Assessment Team (TAT). The following guidance may help identify observable behaviors or circumstances that indicate someone needs assistance, is at risk of disrupting the educational environment for others, or may pose a risk of violence to themselves, others, or within the larger community.

It is not always possible to know the significance of any single behavior taken out of context. The list below identifies risk factors that may indicate developing concerns. We ask that you report knowledge or observation of individuals exhibiting any of these factors/behaviors to the team so that the situation may be assessed and assistance and support may be provided.

What to Report

Three types of behavior should lead to reporting:

Disruptive Behavior

Interferes with the living community or learning environment. Frustration with a person's inability to adhere to generally accepted expectations often prompts a report of this behavior.

Source of concern: HOW THEY ACT

Disturbing Behavior

May not be disruptive, but it creates another concern. Your uneasiness, confusion, or discomfort with a person's actions, thoughts, or feelings often prompts a report of this behavior.

Source of concern: HOW YOU FEEL

Distressed Behavior

Reflects the person's impaired emotional well-being. Your observation when someone appears to be struggling emotionally or discloses their struggle often prompts a report of this type of behavior.

Source of concern: HOW THEY FEEL

How to Report

There are three primary ways to report concerns:

  1. File a report online through our Online Reporting Form.
  2. Contact the Threat Assessment Team at 773-298-4400.
  3. For imminent threats and emergencies, contact the police by dialing 911.

Your report will be reviewed as soon as possible by the Threat Assessment Team (TAT). When filing a report, include all relevant information pertaining to the individual's behavior while refraining from diagnosing or speculating about a mental health issue. Provide a detailed description of the incident or concerning behavior using language that is specific, concise, and objective. If there are relevant documents to include, submit them with the report.

Please Note: Any information submitted in a TAT referral about a student, whether in-person, over the phone, via email, or through the online referral form, becomes part of the student's educational record, subject to FERPA, and may be disclosed to the student upon the student's request.
