Biography
Lety Vargas is a writer and filmmaker from Chicago. She earned an MFA in creative writing and an MFA in film directing from the California Institute of the Arts. During her time at CalArts, Vargas served as student coordinator for the on-campus food pantry and as a managing editor for her creative writing cohort's anthology. She also wrote a speculative fiction short story collection and completed several short films.
Vargas completed her undergraduate studies at Dominican University, earning a bachelor's degree in English (with a writing concentration) and digital cinema. After graduating, she worked as a reading language arts tutor at an elementary school and organized service events at schools and nonprofit organizations across Chicago. These experiences deepened her understanding of the educational challenges faced by students from households where English is not the first language.
As a first-generation college graduate, Vargas understands the challenges faced by students navigating higher education. As the multilingual writing specialist, Vargas hopes to empower first-generation, multilingual students to succeed academically and gain confidence in their writing.
In her free time, Vargas enjoys exploring coffee shops, watching international films from different genres, and visiting museums.
