EXPLORE STEM
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $1.46 million to support the efforts of the EXPLORE STEM (EXcellence in Positive Learning Opportunities and Research Experiences in STEM) program, a coordinated array of interventions designed to provide continuous academic support and peer/faculty mentorship that will increase participation of undergraduates in high-impact educational opportunities, resulting in increased retention and graduation rates in STEM, and increased number of Hispanic undergraduates entering a STEM field or pursuing an advanced degree in STEM. SXU's status as a Hispanic Serving Institution, with Hispanic students making up 38% of SXU's student body, made it possible to be awarded this prestigious grant.
The program will help students develop identities as scientists from the outset, infusing both preparation for graduate school as well as connecting students with career opportunities through targeted interventions at critical transition points and by connecting undergraduates with opportunities for field-based, hands-on experiential learning.
In order to remove the financial burden that many students face when applying to programs such as these, many of the activities that the EXPLORE STEM program lists offers stipends for students and/or covers the cost of the activity. The EXPLORE STEM team believes that money should not be a barrier to quality educational experiences.
