Biology Department

Biology is the study of life -- the knowledge that is crucial for the understanding of our everyday existence. It includes the foundations of classical biology as well as advances in new technologies such as recombinant DNA, bioinformatics and proteomics. These advances make the discipline of biology dynamic and engaging.

The Biological Sciences Department seeks to teach the significant facts upon which the major concepts and theories of the life sciences rest and to generate in students the habit of dealing scientifically with concepts that fall within the scope of science, while developing in students an appreciation for and an understanding of the methodology of science.

Programs of Study

The Biological Sciences Department offers programs that fit the needs of not only Biology majors but also the needs of general education students and candidates for teacher licensure. The department offers a major in Biology with three tracks options in General Biology, Biology Education and Pre-Health. It also offers a minor in Biology.

Biology courses introduce students to laboratory techniques, experimental design and statistical analysis. Developing their knowledge and skills, students enjoy the flexibility to explore broadly and focus their interests, to study abroad, to combine biology with volunteer work, and to prepare for graduate school, professional school or career paths from teaching to conservation. At Saint Xavier we teach the processes of life from organismal functioning to environmental studies not only with traditional lecture and lab format, but also with individual research opportunities.

Biology Resources

Saint Xavier University has an ideal location for the study of biology. The campus has its own spring-fed lake and the Palos Forest Preserves are within a few minutes drive. The laboratory facilities at Saint Xavier University include an animal facility, a cadaver facility and a light microscope research center. Courses in biology utilize the diverse resources in the Chicago area, including museums, zoological parks, nature preserves and Lake Michigan. The Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoos, Morton Arboretum and Field Museum of Natural History provide local settings for field trips and classes.

In addition, Saint Xavier University is a member of the Reis Biological Field Station Consortium. Membership allows faculty the use of the station for field trips/courses and gives SXU students access to all summer field courses offered by any of the Consortium schools.
