Advising Policies

Students who have not declared a major must do so before reaching 60 credit hours. This ensures they stay on track for timely graduation.

A hold will be placed on their account, temporarily pausing registration for upcoming semesters. The hold will be lifted once a major is declared.

Transfer students should not enroll as undeclared if they bring in 60 or more credit hours. 60+ accepted credits without a declared major can make it challenging for them to complete their degrees within the 120-hour limit.

All students must follow their program evaluation or degree audit, which outlines the necessary courses for their major, minor, and general education requirements.

Each program has a specific number of credit hours that are eligible for financial aid, and these credits must be applicable to the student's program of study. Enrolling in courses that do not fulfill degree requirements -- whether electives or other courses -- may impact financial aid eligibility. Students taking courses outside their program requirements must explore alternative financing options, such as payment plans or private loans. For assistance, students should contact the Office of Financial Aid to review their options.

Students looking to take additional coursework in another subject may minor in that subject. There are no limits on the number of minors a student can declare.

No, certificate programs are not eligible for Title IV aid and are therefore not impacted by these regulations.

Federal financial aid only covers courses that apply directly to a student's program of study. Enrolling in courses that do not fulfill degree requirements, including electives or courses outside the program, may affect financial aid eligibility. To maintain eligibility, students should regularly review their degree audit and consult with their academic advisor to ensure all courses meet program requirements.

Students should log in to the mySXU portal and go to Student Self-Service. Select Financial Aid, Enrolled Credits, and Spring 2025. The column Title IV Credits will indicate if the course(s) they are enrolled in are eligible for Title IV.
