Welcome to Parent Orientation at Saint Xavier University. We're glad you're here and look forward to providing you with valuable information about your student's upcoming time at SXU!
Parent Orientation - Day 1
Parent Check-In and Breakfast (Regina Hall Lobby)
9:00 - 9:45 a.m.
Begin the day with the Parent Orientation check-in, enjoy a light breakfast and receive your program materials. Staff will be available to welcome you and answer any questions.
A Cougar Welcome (McGuire Hall)
10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Meet members of the University leadership, staff and Orientation Leaders at this official kickoff to your summer visit!
The Mercy Tradition (McGuire Hall)
10:30 - 10:50 a.m.
What makes SXU distinctive? During this session you learn about what it means to attend a Catholic and Mercy institution of higher education and will be introduced to the University’s eight core values.
The Academic Journey (Various Locations)
10:50 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
In this session, your student will receive information about his/her Fall 2015 schedule and meet with faculty and advisors from his/her academic division and major. You will also learn specific information about SXU’s general education and major requirements, which will help prepare your student for advising and registration moving forward.
Health and Wellness at SXU (Butler Reception Room)
12:00 - 12:30 p.m.
Meet with the SXU staff members who will discuss student health services, SXU immunization requirements, and student health insurance.
Lunch (SXU Diner)
12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Re-energize with good food and conversation. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet SXU staff members who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
Money Matters (McGuire Hall)
1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Meet representatives from the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of the Bursar who will provide tips and strategies to help you understand your rights and responsibilities concerning financial aid eligibility and payment obligations. This session is for students and parents.
Life Inside the Classroom (Various Locations)
2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
See what it’s like to take a class at SXU! You will choose from various topics and get a chance to meet a faculty member who will give you a peek inside the classroom and explain SXU’s academic expectations of your student.
The First-Year Experience (Butler Reception Room)
3:30 - 4:00 p.m.
All first-year students participate in a number of programs designed to welcome, acclimate, engage and support them. During this session you will learn about First Day for First Years, Welcome Week, Transitions, the Common Reading Experience and other support services, including the Learning Center and Disability Services and the Student Success Program, that are available to your student throughout their first academic year and beyond.
Paths to Success (Butler Reception Room)
4:00 - 4:30 p.m.
During this session we will explore how on-campus employment, student leadership positions, internships, research, study abroad, and volunteer experiences impact your student’s career preparation. Learn about the opportunities and resources available here at SXU to help your student plan for the future.
Life Outside the Classroom (Butler Reception Room)
4:30 - 5:00 p.m.
Learn about ways your student can get involved on campus and the different resources available to them to do so. Representatives from Campus Ministry, the Shannon Athletic Center, and Student Life will be present.
Parent Reception (Gallery Lounge)
5:00 - 5:45 p.m.
Join Saint Xavier University’s leadership, the vice presidents, deans, faculty and staff for an informal reception; mix and mingle, ask questions and experience SXU hospitality at its best.
Parent Orientation - Day 2
Continental Breakfast (SXU Diner)
8:00 - 9:00 a.m.
Start the day off right with a continental breakfast.
GPS - Guide to Personal Success (Smith-Morris Quad; Rain Location: Shannon Athletic Center)
9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Join representatives from academic and student services departments across campus that will be on hand to answer any questions you might have and provide useful information that will help your student navigate the resources available here at SXU.
Ask the Orientation Leaders (Room S-101)
10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Enjoy this opportunity to meet some of our current Orientation Leaders and learn about student life at SXU. Please come prepared with questions!
Creating a Safe Environment (Resident Parents - Room S-113; Commuter Parents - Room S-101)
10:45 - 11:30 a.m.
Have you talked with your son or daughter about making good decisions and being safe on campus? This session includes an overview of the Student Code of Conduct as well as common sense tips for managing daily life on campus. Presented by the Office of the Dean of Students, the Counseling Center and SXU Public Safety.
SXU Parenthood (Room S-101)
11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Learn about opportunities for involvement as an SXU Parent. Hosted by Alumni and Parent Relations.
Lunch (SXU Diner)
12:00 - 12:45 p.m.
Join us for one more meal in the SXU Diner!
SXU Services and Resources (Room S-101)
12:45 - 1:15 p.m.
This session will help you learn about some of the services and resources available to your student here at SXU. Come with your questions about the Cougar Card, Information Technology, the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library, Chartwells Dining Service, and the University Bookstore.
A New Chapter (Room S-101)
1:15 - 1:45 p.m.
Student Affairs staff will be on hand to share tips and resources and to help you navigate your role in your student’s life while still supporting their independence. Learn how to help your student overcome obstacles, changes in communication and how to distinguish real problems from normal adjustment issues.
Discover SXU (Tour leaves from the SXU Diner)
1:45 - 3:00 p.m.
Participate in a parents’ tour of campus, important offices and residence halls at the Chicago campus or take time for personal business.
Closing: Focus on the Core Values (McDonough Chapel)
3:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Experience the Saint Xavier faith community and core values. Members of all faith traditions are warmly welcomed.
