Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Studies

Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Studies

The Pastoral Ministry Institute of Saint Xavier University offers a fifteen credit graduate certificate in pastoral studies. Intended for the training of lay ecclesial ministers in the Church, the certificate curriculum is designed to meet the expectations of the Archdiocese of Chicago both for various lay ecclesial ministry preparations and for ongoing professional development. In addition, completion of the certificate partially fulfills Archdiocesan theological requirements for Pastoral Associates and Directors of Religious Education.

Certificate Requirements

The certificate of pastoral studies is awarded after students have completed five seminars offered by the Pastoral Ministry Institute, one in each of the following areas: scripture, theology, history, pastoral theology and ethics. Seminar offerings (three credits each) may include:

A Collaborative Venture

The certificate program is designed to serve students beginning coursework that will lead to a graduate degree in pastoral ministry and/or commissioned Archdiocesan ministry in Chicago. While any of the graduate courses completed at Saint Xavier University may be transferred into other graduate programs according to the institution’s policy for transfer credit, the graduate certificate in pastoral studies will be accepted into either the Catholic Theological Union or Loyola University’s Institute of Pastoral Studies.

Fifteen hours of the certificate of pastoral studies will be accepted into the Catholic Theological Union toward a master of arts in pastoral studies or a master of divinity degree.

Nine to twelve credit hours of the certificate program will be accepted into the master of arts (pastoral studies) at Loyola University’s Institute of Pastoral Studies.

The Archdiocese of Chicago Lay Ministry Formation Programs have information and applications for those interested in pursuing lay ecclesial ministry as a pastoral associate or director of religious education.
