Living Learning Community
Living Learning Communities (LLC) are residence hall communities that bring college learning into the everyday lives of students. These communities offer special programming in the residence hall and opportunities to interact with SXU faculty and staff that are affiliated with the Living Learning communities. Most learning communities incorporate active and collaborative learning activities and promote involvement in complementary academic and social activities that extend beyond the classroom.
LLC at SXU
The General Education Program, Residence Life and the First Year Experience are introducing residential communities tied to academic courses as part of the General Education curriculum.
Students accepted for the LLC program will live together in a residence hall and will participate in three courses together, two in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. These cohort groups will work directly with faculty, staff and student leaders assigned to the community.
Benefits to Students
First-year students will have the opportunity to enhance their classroom learning through activities in the residence halls and off-campus events. Students will also be expected to be involved in the planning and implementation of these programs.
Based on the National Study of Living Learning Programs (2007), students who participate in living-learning communities of this sort prove more likely than their peers to:
- Experience a smooth transition into their new environment
- Build, maintain and utilize health social networks
- Develop mentoring relationships with faculty
- Perceive their residence hall to be academically and socially supportive
- Improve critical thinking skills
- Demonstrate civic responsibility
