Mary Deeley kicks off 2007-08 Theology South lecture series on Oct. 4

Discusses Celtic spirituality and experience of God at Saint Xavier University

Chicago (Sept. 20, 2007) – Mary Deeley, Ph.D., will discuss Celtic spirituality and experience of God in the opening lecture of this season’s Theology South lecture series at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in Saint Xavier University’s Butler Reception Room, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

In a lecture titled “Finding the Thin Places: Celtic Spirituality and Our Experience of God,” Deeley explores the understanding of God and the concepts of the thin place, the well and the open gate, as well as the love of nature, pilgrimage, and the spoken word present in the Celtic tradition, and shows how these can deepen our prayer and give us examples of Christian discipleship.

“Many people today invoke the spirit of the Celts to support a return to nature, a completely egalitarian society, and a new-age interest in crystals, paganism and magic,” Deeley said. “In reality, Celtic spirituality and theology, revealed in the poetry and story-telling of the Celtic nations, enriches the understanding of our experience of God.

Deeley is pastoral associate of the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University. She earned her Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Early Christian Literature from Northwestern University, and also holds degrees in music and divinity.

The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. It is open to the public; admission is $6. Coffee will be available beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University Pastoral Ministry Institute at (773) 298-3900.
