Saint Xavier students exhibit artwork in "Available for Hire"

Six student artists featured April 16 to May 9

Chicago (March 28, 2007) – The artwork of Saint Xavier University graduating art majors will be showcased in “Available for Hire,” an exhibit opening Monday, April 16, in the SXU Gallery, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

Highlighting student artwork from a variety of media, the exhibit will run through May 9 and is free and open to the public. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, in the SXU Gallery.

“Students gain exposure to the realities of mounting an exhibition and are responsible for all aspects, from publicity to opening reception arrangements to presentation of their work within a specific space,” said Catherine Ruggie Saunders, associate professor of art and design at Saint Xavier University. “Seeing the artwork they developed during an entire academic year ‘come to life’ on the walls of the SXU Gallery is a priceless experience they could not have envisioned two semesters ago.”

The exhibit will feature the artwork of Shannon Roman of Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood (mixed media/painting); Bernadette Gallegos of Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood (linoleum prints); Veronica Cardenas of Alsip (video); Lisa Wojick of Palos Park (environmental design); MJ Lennon of Batavia (painting); and Marianne Lopez of Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood (performance and video installation).

The art gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University art department at (773) 298-3081.
