U.S. Armed Forces awards medal to Saint Xavier University's Fr. Robert Barry

Campus minister receives award for outstanding service

Chicago (Jan. 30, 2007) – The U.S. Armed Forces has awarded Saint Xavier University’s Father Robert Barry, O.P., with the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal for his outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement and service.

Barry, who has served in the military for nearly 20 years, is currently a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard and the wing chaplain for the U.S. Air Force’s 183rd Fighter Wing in Springfield, Ill. For the past two summers, he has provided sacramental and pastoral care to more than 1,000 wounded and ill American soldiers and Marines at the Landsthul Regional Medical Center, one of Germany’s leading trauma hospitals that cares for large numbers of the sick and wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan. Patients, physicians and family members of these patients have commended Barry for his compassionate pastoral care.

“I am not sure I deserve the honor because I think that the prayer, faith and hope in God exhibited by the doctors, nurses, staff, soldiers and Marines far outstrips mine. They are the ones who deserve the honors,” said Barry, who lives in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

Barry currently serves as Saint Xavier University’s campus minister and instructor of religious studies courses. He has been at Saint Xavier since 2003.

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846, Saint Xavier University was the first Mercy college in the United States and is Chicago’s oldest Catholic university.
