Leadership Academy of the Southwest Suburbs to train future leaders

SXU program to be offered at Orland Park campus, September through May

Chicago (Jan. 22, 2007) –Beginning in September, Saint Xavier University will offer a program designed to identify, train and motivate current and future leaders of Chicago’s greater southwest suburban region.

The Leadership Academy of the Southwest Suburbs will be operated in close collaboration with the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce. Participation is open to chamber members. The program will consist of nine full-day sessions, one day per month, September through May, and will be held at Saint Xavier University’s Orland Park campus.

“We realize the extreme importance of developing business and community leaders,” said Bernadette Shanahan-Haas, executive director of the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce. “That is why the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be a partner in the first Leadership Academy program for our area.”
Organizers have planned a variety of learning opportunities focused on teambuilding, regional history, social services, government, education, healthcare, economic development, arts and culture, and the media.

According to Keloryn Putnam, executive director of the Orland Park Area Chamber, “Good leadership doesn’t just happen. Although we all possess the capacity for leadership, only those who cultivate it will truly be able to lead. I’m very excited to be part of the Leadership Academy of the Southwest Suburbs, designed to develop future leaders for this area. It will be a benefit to all who live and work here.”

Many guest speakers will be in current leadership positions around the community, said Jim Kruse, executive director for the Center for Outreach and Professional Development at Saint Xavier University’s Orland Park campus. “People attending the class will have the opportunity to interact with these speakers,” Kruse said. “This will be an excellent opportunity to begin networking.”

The academy will accommodate 40 participants each academic year. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. There are still opportunities for corporate sponsorship of the program. Inquiries about the Leadership Academy, fees or corporate sponsorship should be directed to Jim Kruse at (708) 802-6214 or jkruse@sxu.edu.
