Victoria Garvey to explore translations of 'mercy' on Feb. 1

Theology South lecture series to continue

Chicago (Jan. 12, 2007) – Biblical theologian Victoria Garvey will explore translations of the word ‘mercy’ in the next Theology South lecture at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in Saint Xavier University’s Butler Reception Room, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

In a lecture titled “Mercy Me! God’s Passion; Ours Too,” Garvey will discuss the Hebrew and Greek translations of ‘mercy’ and their English equivalents.

“This range of meanings is textured and rich, and leads us to a consideration of the nature of God and attitudes and actions we are invited to embrace and emulate,” Garvey said.

Garvey is canon for Lifelong Christian Formation for the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago and director of Christian Education and Formation at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Barrington Hills. She has taught biblical theology at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary for 12 years and is a consultant to various parishes and dioceses in biblical theology, education and women’s studies.

Theology South: A Forum for Thought Lecture Series was founded in 1980 at Saint Xavier University as a monthly gathering of serious-minded and thoughtful women who are interested in learning about issues relating to the life of the spirit and mind.

The presentation is open to the public. Admission is $6. Coffee will be available beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University Pastoral Ministry Institute at (773) 298-3900.
