"Of Exile and Homecoming" choral concert scheduled for Dec. 2

SXU Women's and Men's Ensembles to perform

Chicago (Nov. 17, 2006) – The Saint Xavier University Women’s and Men’s Ensembles, under the direction of adjunct professor Jennifer Kerr Budziak, will present a choral concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in McDonough Chapel, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

Titled “Of Exile and Homecoming,” the concert will feature performances by the ensembles of students, faculty, staff and community members and accompanied by student flutist Caitlin Ryan and pianist Daniel Surma and violinist Chia-Ying Hsu, adjunct professors at Saint Xavier.

The concert will feature music spanning 10 centuries and four continents, singing of peace, unity and a longing for God. Music to be performed includes Gregorian and Russian Orthodox chants and various works of Hildegard of Bingen, Antonin Dvorâk, Gabriel Fauré, Ysaye Barnwell and many others.

The Women’s Ensemble will also sing selections from the rarely performed “Songs of Survival,” arrangements of great symphonic works recreated from memory and performed by a “vocal orchestra” of women interred in a Japanese prison camp during World War II.

Budziak received her master’s degree in choral conducting from Indiana University and is a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Cathedral Singers. She currently serves as the director of music ministries at St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs.

The concert is open to the public. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and visiting students. Admission is free for all SXU students, faculty and staff with a valid University ID. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University music department at (773) 298-3421.
