SXU lecture explores the many roles of Mary on Nov. 30
Lecture titled "Hail, Mary, Full of Grace and Grit and God"
Chicago (Nov. 13, 2006) – Biblical theologian Victoria Garvey will explore the many roles of Mary at a lecture titled “Hail, Mary, Full of Grace and Grit and God” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in Saint Xavier University’s McDonough Chapel, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“Victoria Garvey will provide a fresh insight into Mary that will be inspiring and encouraging during the chaotic time of Christmas preparations,” said Sister Cathleen M. Cahill, R.S.M., administrative director of the Pastoral Ministry Institute at Saint Xavier University.
In the Catholic faith, Mary was the first disciple and the first to instruct others to heed the message of Jesus. As a strong woman who thoroughly understood the scriptures, Mary was not afraid to speak about them. She was a figure not only of breathtaking piety, but of immense courage.
Garvey is canon for Lifelong Christian Formation for the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago and director of Christian Education and Formation at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Barrington Hills. She has taught biblical theology at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary for 12 years and is a consultant to various parishes and dioceses in biblical theology, education and women’s studies.
