WXAV wins four Silver Domes
Illinois Broadcasters Association awards announced
Chicago (Oct. 20, 2006) – Saint Xavier University’s student-run radio station, WXAV-FM (88.3), won four awards recently at the fifth annual Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Student Silver Dome Awards at Illinois State University.
“We knew we were nominated in two categories (out of six): Best Radio Newscast and Best Radio Spot,” said Rob Quicke, director of student media at Saint Xavier University. “But we were completely stunned to learn that we had won the top two spots in both categories.”
WXAV has won seven Silver Domes in the past three years. Saint Xavier competed against all colleges and universities in Illinois that have college radio stations, including ISU and other large state schools. More than 250 students attended the event representing competing college and university radio stations across Illinois.
The awards won this year by SXU are as follows:
· First place Best Radio Newscast: Nick Jakusz for WXAV Sports Newscast
· Runner-up Best Radio Newscast: Alicia Hiatt and Peter Kreten for WXAV Newscast
· First place Best Radio Spot: Matthew Lorenzo for Matt’s Show Promo
· Runner-up Best Radio Spot: Peter Kreten for WXAV Music Phone Promo
Hiatt, a senior organizational communication major from Oak Lawn, said she applied her experience as a sound editor and recording voice-overs for national commercials into reading and producing the daily news.
“I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with WXAV,” Hiatt said. “It’s nice to know that Saint Xavier’s radio station not only holds its own against but surpasses larger state universities in competition.”
As the station’s program director, Kreten, of Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, trains new deejays, helps produce on-air content and oversees the programming of the entire station. “Since WXAV is a small station, it allows you to do more activities. You can be more hands-on with your shows and things you can produce. You have complete creative freedom for shows, and you can work in all fields of the radio station to see what you really like.”
Kreten has worked at the station since his freshman year in 2002. A double major in mass communication and secondary education who plans to teach history, Kreten also plans to pursue a career in the radio industry after graduation.
Jakusz, of Homer Glen, and Lorenzo, of Mundelein, both graduated in May with bachelor degrees in mass communication.
“Congratulations to everyone who won,” Quicke said. “A lot of people came up to us afterward and said, ‘It was another great year for SXU.’”
