Saint Xavier University and Moraine Valley Community College agreement

Nursing students benefit from partnership

Chicago (May 8, 2006) – Saint Xavier University and Moraine Valley Community College have signed a dual admission agreement to provide a smoother transfer experience for nursing students between the two schools.

Under the agreement, Moraine students earning an associate in applied science degree in Nursing can complete a bachelor of science degree in Nursing at Saint Xavier’s Orland Park campus. Student progress is facilitated through timely completion of program requirements and improved sequencing of learning experiences.

“With the significant national nursing shortage, our dual admission agreement with Moraine Valley Community College allows students to move quickly into the baccalaureate nursing courses and bring special skills to the patients,” said Anne R. Bavier, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing at Saint Xavier University.

Participating students benefit from guidance from both institutions, which provides access to a wider array of choices for academic planning to meet students’ personal goals, preferences and needs.

“We think that this agreement will benefit our students and graduates of the Moraine Valley nursing program, while responding to the community’s need for nurses with advanced degrees in our community healthcare workplaces,” said Peggy Machon, assistant dean for career programs and director of health sciences at Moraine Valley Community College.

Saint Xavier University President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., said the agreement is a win-win situation for all involved. “The dual admission agreement in nursing continues our strong relationship with Moraine Valley Community College. It reinforces one of our key values of lifelong learning by guiding students into SXU prerequisites while they complete their MVCC nursing courses.”

Students in Moraine’s nursing program interested in participating in the partnership program are encouraged to take prescribed prerequisite “bridge” courses in preparation for the RN-BSN. Courses can be taken either at Moraine or Saint Xavier prior to or concurrently with their enrollment in the RN-BSN program.

Students who successfully complete the Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 out of a possible 4.0 from Moraine and have passed the NCLEX-RN exam will be fully admitted into Saint Xavier’s RN-BSN program at the Orland Park campus. Application fees will be waived for participants in this program.
