Author John Savant discusses faith and patriotism

Theology South lecture presented by Saint Xavier University

Chicago (March 17, 2006) – Author John Savant, Ph.D., will explore faith and patriotism at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 6, as part of the season’s final Theology South Lecture Series at Saint Xavier University’s Butler Reception Room, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

In a lecture titled, “Faith and Patriotism: A Voice from the Loyal Opposition,” Savant will read essays from his new book, “Out of Anger/Out of Love (Essays on Language, War and Belief).” Essays in the book have their matrix in the Christian humanism that was the focus of Savant’s long teaching career in literature at Dominican University of California.

The essays express Savant’s disappointment with various civic and ecclesiastical issues, but do so out of his love for and loyalty to his church and country. In “This Church, My Church,” Savant explains his abiding loyalty to the church despite current scandals, in light of religion’s primary function (and challenge) in the mediation of mystery. Other essays have to do with belief and metaphor, war and language, sacrament and poetry, and evil and religion. Several of these essays have been published in Commonweal and America magazines.

Savant will also read from a collection of poems he published in 1997. Titled “Brendan’s Voyage and Other Poems,” the 10-part title poem uses the 6th century voyage of Irish Monk Brendan as a metaphor for everyone’s journey to spiritual wholeness.

The lecture is open to the public; admission is $6. This lecture concludes this season’s Theology South forum series at Saint Xavier University. The series will resume in October. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University Pastoral Ministry Institute at (773) 298-3900.
