Chinese Pipa Musician performs at Saint Xavier

Xavier Classics at Noon Concert continues

Chicago (Feb. 23, 2006) – The Xavier Classics at Noon Concert Series continues with “Chinese Music for the Pipa,” featuring musician Yang Wei. The concert will be performed at noon on Friday, March 10, in McGuire Hall, located on Saint Xavier University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Wei began studying various Chinese musical instruments at the age of six. By age 13, he was concentrating on pipa, or Chinese lute, studying with the Chinese pipa master Liu Dehai. At age 18, he was performing with the National Shanghai Orchestra, and later was awarded first prize for the International Chinese Musical Instruments Competition. Wei has performed worldwide and toured with world-renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma. He blends Western themes and ideas with his own Chinese heritage.

The pipa, an instrument of great virtuosic capabilities, is often the subject of many paintings and poems; it holds a position similar to the guitar in Western culture.

The concert will include traditional pipa music such as “Ancient Battlefield” and “Spring in Tian Mountains,” as well as “The Bumble Bee” from Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakoff’s opera, “The Legend of Tsar Saltan.”

The Xavier Classics at Noon Concert Series is founded by artistic director Jan Bickel, Ph.D., professor of music and director of vocal studies at Saint Xavier University. It provides 50 minutes of fine classical music to the university and the neighboring communities. Since 2005, the series has been supported by the Illinois Arts Council.

“Chinese Music for the Pipa” is the second of three noon concerts. The concerts are open to the public and admission is $5. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University Music Department at (773) 298-3421.
