Saint Xavier University student receives Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Award

Senior Sean Gross honored at ceremony and reception in Springfield

Chicago (Nov. 18, 2005) –Saint Xavier University senior Sean Gross was awarded the Student Laureate Award by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on Oct. 22 at a ceremony in the Hall of Representatives of the Old State Capitol in Springfield.

All award recipients were presented medallions at the ceremony on behalf of Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The recipients also were invited to attend a congratulatory reception at Springfield’s historical Governor’s Mansion.

The Student Laureate Award is granted each fall to a senior who exhibits excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities from each four-year degree-granting institution in Illinois.

Carrie Schade, assistant dean of students and director of student activities & first year programs, believes Gross deserved the award. “Sean is immensely dedicated to being a student, as well as being a student leader. He has shown impressive talent in establishing the Student Government Association and dedicates himself to serving his colleagues as a Peer Minister.”

Originally from Goleta, -Calif., Gross is double-majoring in Spanish and philosophy at Saint Xavier and has been on the Dean’s List of Honors Students for six consecutive semesters. He has participated in several extracurricular activities, including the Service Club and Campus Ministry. Gross also has served as president of the Student Government Association for the last two years.

Gross heard about the award last year while serving on the award selection committee. “When I received a letter this year that invited me to apply, I already knew what an honor the award was. Since I do feel that I have made an impact here at Saint Xavier, I thought I would give it a try. I really enjoyed the well-executed ceremony, as well as the good food and conversation that followed at the reception.”

Gross has also been the recipient of several other honors including the Saint Xavier Presidential Scholarship, the Raytheon Scholar Award, the Dean of Students Award for Student Leadership and the 2004 Sister Mary Paulita Morris, R.S.M., Service Award.
