Education Department Scholarships
This scholarship honors an admitted Education Department (except FBMP) graduate student who possesses the critical qualities of Dr. Binder or has been the recipient of the qualities of Dr. Binder and is cultivating these qualities. Dr. Bet Brophy,'67, Holly June Wainwright, '84, and contributions from family, friends and former students of Dr. Binder established this scholarship.
This scholarship honors an admitted education major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. A written essay is required. This scholarship was established through the estate of Dorothy Davis.
The Dean Beverly Gulley Memorial Scholarship will honor the legacy of the late Dr. S. Beverly Gulley. This scholarship, made possible by a generous gift from her husband, Dr. Gerry Gulley, will support an undergraduate student in the Education Department. Dr. Gulley served as dean of the Education Department for 17 years and worked tirelessly to advance programs in early childhood, elementary and secondary education -- both at SXU and throughout the State of Illinois.
Thecla Kwak '48 will be remembered through the Thecla Kwak '48 Memorial Scholarship. Established in 2013 with memorial gifts from family and friends, this scholarship will benefit a female undergraduate student in the Education Department. Mrs. Kwak was a teacher for more than 35 years. There was hardly a year when she would not run into former students who thanked her for her contribution to their life success.
As a tribute to Uncle Mike Lynch, who was an informal mentor and teach to many young people in his Bridgeport neighborhood, this scholarship recognizes elementary education majors. Applicants should maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and submit an essay. An interview may also be required.

This scholarship honors an African-American undergraduate student who demonstrates attributes of excellence, service and integrity -- all qualities that embodied Dr. Leake's life. The applicant must also have a GPA of at least 2.8 and have full-time enrollment and admission to the School of Education at Saint Xavier University. This scholarship was established through the generosity of Dr. Elsbeth Meuth.
This scholarship was created from the estate of Helen M. Heerey, who, in her will, designated a gift to create the "Julius and Catherine Heerey Malin Scholarship for students majoring in education, who is in financial need and maintaining a C+ or better average.
Through their estates, former Education Department faculty member Dr. George McGuire and his wife Eunice created a permanent investment in the preparation of future educators. Students who receive this scholarship exemplify the qualities of academic excellence, respect, and hospitality. All undergraduate and graduate students (except MATL) in the Saint Xavier University Education Department are eligible to submit an application. The scholarship is a grant applied towards tuition in the following academic year.
